More on "Why OESIS OK?"
In the past few weeks we have seen vendors roll out important updates to their products which broke features that the OESIS Framework had supported. This meant that any organization that was using Cisco or Juniper solutions likely had users who found themselves unable to access important information. Many support calls followed, including those from a very important European Bank. Not only were the IT departments of individual organizations impacted, but these calls likely hit both the technology solution vendors and the software vendors.
OESIS OK, and the Am I OESIS OK? utility are methods to tighten up integration, and to make sure that when a vendor's product hits the market it is already supported. By using the utility prior to a release a vendor will have access to diagnostic information, revealing whether ongoing support for supported features has been broken. Ideally, the vendor, discovering that an update has broken something, then goes back and creates a fix based on what had been working in the past. However, if that is impossible, OESIS OK works with the software company to create a new method for supporting a feature.
OESIS OK. Reducing support calls for everyone. AV-Comparatives Tests UpdatedAV-Comparatives, the Austrian independent testing agency, have released their retrospective test results for 16 antivirus products. Check out their full results on their test page.
Highlights of the award levels are listed below:
Advanced+ Level was achieved by G Data, Kaspersky, ESET, F-Secure, Microsoft, Avast, BitDefender and eScan (aka Microworld).
Advanced level was achieved by Avira, AVG and Symantec.
Standard level was achieved by McAfee, TrustPort, Sophos, Norman and Kingsoft. Anti Malware Test results releasedAnti Malware Test, the international independent testing agency, have released their zero-day threat test results.
Platinum IE8 Tops NSS Labs Updated Browser Security TestsNSS Labs has updated its tests for the most common Internet browsers. Once again Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 has proved, by their metric, to be far better at blocking socially engineered malware (the type frequently seen at Facebook). In fact, IE8 was the only browser to show an increase in its efficacy, jumping from 69% to 81%. The next best competitor, Mozilla Firefox 3.x fell from 30% to 27%.
Results were a significantly closer when it came to blocking phishing attacks, however, with the two main browsers effectively tied.
As always, methodologies differ between testing agencies, so do your own research before deciding on whether test results should impact your product choice. Endpoint Security and ManageabilityThese topics are on the minds of managers, according to a recent survey quoted in Ellen Messmer's Network World article. Notably, there's a concern about being able to manage growing applications like virtualization, something the OESIS Framework added a few months ago.
"The five most important features for managing endpoint security identified in the survey were: antivirus and antimalware; whole disk encryption; application control; patch and remediation management; and IT asset management." New Criteria PostedCriteria sheets have been added to the OESIS OK Criteria Page. Updates include criteria for the data loss prevention and virtual machine categories.

Trend Micro's David Perry on OESIS OK Interoperability TestingThe Global Director of Education for Trend Micro, David Perry discusses the importance of application interoperability at the recent AVAR conference in Kyoto, Japan.
AV-Comparatives Testing ResultsAs noted in this ZDNet article, prevention is often better than the cure. However, some products are still better than others at doing their job. AV-Comparatives recently competed an important series of tests of anti-malware products for malware applications that are currently in the wild.
Tested products include: Avast Professional Edition 4.8 Am I OESIS OK? Utility UpdatedVersion 2.1.3.1 has been uploaded and made available.
We've made some improvements:
- Third party certification data is now only displayed when product has been tested by that organization (no more red "x" for untested products. Red "x" now indicates failure in testing).
- Third party certification data updated with latest testing info
- URL links now open using the default browser instead of insisting upon IE, as long as it's supported by OESIS Local.
- AV-Comparatives on-demand results are displayed using number. OESIS OK at AVARPlease visit us at AVAR 2009 in Kyoto next week. The conference will be taking place November 4-6. Microworld Receives CertificationMicroworld's eScan for Windows 10 and eScan Internet Security 10 are now Certified in the antivirus and antispyware categories.

Company Fined for Not Having a Mandated Employee Security PolicyAs this article in ZDNet points out, a scammer was able to retrieve the login credentials of a Commonwealth Financial Network's employee through the use of a keystroke logger. What's important to note here is that, despite their swift reaction to this incident, it could have potentially been avoided altogether if they had an access posture check in place that mandated the use of an anti-malware application. With the number of potential threats in the wild, this should be part of any common sense approach to network security.
And, to put our own spin on this... if the access products they are using are from Cisco, Juniper (and many others) for maximum enforceable security, it would be best to ensure that the user's endpoint security applications are OESIS OK Certified or Gold Certified as these options give the administrator the maximum amount of manageability.
